Robert: A good place to start learning about Melungeons is here:
Valuable website relating to the Historically Identified Melungeons.
A great deal of controversy surrounds these people today and has historically. Their origins are shrouded in mystery and many possible theories have been advanced from their being descendants of Roanoke Island survivors, Pardo's and other Spanish settlement survivors to Sephardic Jews. They said they were Portuguese pronounced "Portyghee". There is a definite Indian contribution and in some cases African American. Although it must be noted they were consistantly described as having European features. Additionally many denied AA blood and refused to send their children to Black schools. They were denied the right to vote until a famous court case found all but one of the defendants not guilty.
An ongoing project in the main ancestral home of the historically recognized Melungeons, Hawkins County, TN, is discovering new facts daily. Many volunteers are sifting through a huge amount of old documents.
