In the late 1970's I talked with my aunt who lived in Robbinsville NC and
gleaned family information. She said that her granny Ashe (Elizabeth Lorentz
Ash) had gone to school with Abraham Lincoln as a young child.
When I put the dates together and checked the history books this story made
no sense. I had contact with a professional genealogist in NC and asked him
about the story. He wrote to me and related the story of how Abraham Lincoln
was believed to be fathered by Abraham Enloe. This genealogist friend of
mine had traveled all over NC interviewing the older folks. He said that the
"old timers" believed that this was true. I checked our local library, then
in Akron Ohio and did find a couple of books regarding the Abraham Enloe story.
It turns out the granny Ash was married in Lincoln Co. Not very far from
Rutherford Co.
Later, I was retelling this story to another NC researcher and they had said
that their gr granny had always said that she "rocked Abraham Lincoln in the
cradle."
