Yes -- and the further apart the better. For instance, I'm currently in
touch with somebody who shares my surname, but the closest male line common
ancestor with me, John Todd of Rowley, was born in 1621 in England. He's
currently got a 25 marker test on order, and if we get the match that we
expect (24/25 or 25/25) that'll give us a 10-generation baseline; we can
reasonably assume that that's the pattern for anyone descended from John of
Rowley. Since Christopher Todd of Connecticut is by paper trail record
the first cousin of John of Rowley (common ancestor is Sir William Todd of
Pontefract, Yorkshire, England), we can make a reasonable guesstimate of
that line's signature as well. (We don't yet have a test on a male line
descendant of Christopher. If we did, that would push the baseline back
another two generations.)
