Very interesting thread, to say the least. It does bring out "ingrained"
lines of thought along with historical possibilities.

The Smithsonian Magazine (perhaps 15 years ago or more) published a
marvelous article on a very high ranking U.S. government official from the
early 1900's (if my memory is holding up) or late 1800's. Evidently he had
a wife and 5 children "on the side" while presenting a "bachelor" public
image. As always seems to happen, the press eventually got wind of the
marriage. I don't recall the details, but he had a very passionate, legal
marriage and 5 children with an African-American woman. She understood him
in a way that no other woman ever had, and he evidently loved her dearly.
Interesting that many still have difficulty understanding human
relationships and their depths, often to the point of not wanting to
acknowledge that such relationships could even exist. It reminds me of the
story of the little old lady who took her cat into the veterinarian to see
why her feline was "ailing". After a rather thorough examination of the
animal the veterinarian announced that it was pregnant. The lady responded
rather indignantly that that was impossible as she never let the cat out of
the house. The veterinarian asked if there were any other cats in the
house, to which she replied, "Only her brother."
