I really appreciate your taking the time to answer my question. It
struck me as odd the letters corresponded to the groups, but your
explanation helped clarify it.

If you're referring to the diagram of the circular mtDNA molecule at
MitoMap,

then the letters are for a different set of abbreviations. Those
letters show
the locations of various tRNA (transfer RNA, a small molecule which
bonds to
a specific amino acid and ferries it to a ribosome for assembling a
protein).
Amino acids can have three-letter or one-letter abbreviations.

at Wikipedia which shows the amino acids, their abbreviations, and their
properties:
