Gordon,

Great site and one that I'm sure I'll reference in the future. One minor
comment. From your site: "Since a repeat value of 8 at DYS455 is considered
to be characteristic of I1a, no attempt was made to search for any
dispersion at this site." Back in June I located a handful of examples of
I1a with DYS455 equal to 7 and 9:

To actually see the clock tick on DYS455 to 9, please see kit #23875 at
http://www.sorrellsgenealogy.com/dnaresultstable.html. This Sorrells case
was interesting since kit #23875 matched 24/25 with with two other Sorrells,
with the only difference being that the other two have DYS455=8. It would be
interesting to test any sons of grandsons of #23875 to see if DYS455
reverted to 8 or stayed at 9.

In another case, we see no evidence of reversion to 8. In the Thornton
surname project at http://www.starthorn.com/ThorntonDNA/CurrentResults.asp,
please see the Yellow Group. The mutation to DYS455=9 here dates back to at
least the 1600s, with no reversion to 8 among the descendants who have been
tested.

If I remember correctly, the Thornton and Sorrells results have been
SNP-tested for I. A comparison of the remaining markers to your site and
other research leads me to conclude that these are I1a. For completeness on
your I1a STR distribution site, you may consider adding a note that there
are known examples of presumed I1a that have DYS455 equal to 7 and 9.
Thanks,

Phil Goff
