I take a more macro look at testing rates.

Many of us in American rely on network TV news and other programs to inform,
educate us. Much of these programs are punctuated by commercial messages
designed by savvy marketers to sell their products.

However to my knowledge, none of the major DNA testing companies, nor other
genealogical firms like those that own Ancestry.com and Family Tree Maker,
have advertised on the major television or cable networks.

There is a lot of hesitation by many people to DNA testing; and, many of us
as SURNAME coordinators have to find ways to breakdown and circumvent these
mental barriers and get folks into our projects.

People will only buy a product if there is a perceived need for it. If the
companies will announce their product and the benefits to genealogical
research, then the market will pick and DNA tests will swamp us.
