Another good study on the Aromuns:

Alu Insertion Polymorphisms in the Balkans and the
Origins of the Aromuns," D. Comas, Annals of Human
Genetics (2004) 68: 120-127.

The Aromuns live in northern Greece, as well as
Albania, Macedonia and Bulgaria. Like Romanian, their
language is derived from classical Latin. Their
population is estimated to be between 600,000 to 1
million.

For those who don't have access to the two studies,
the findings of both indicated that the Aromuns do not
constitute a homogeneous group separate from the rest
of the Balkan populations. In fact, both studies
found a remarkable homogeneity among the Balkan
populations, including the Aromuns, suggesting a
common ancestry for Balkan populations. The genetic
findings suggest that differences in haplotypes
between Aromun and non-Aromun groups are the results
of genetic drift as a result of their isolation.
