Thank you, John, for this interesting discussion of the Plantagenet
family history and the difficulty of determining what the Y line was.
This interest stemmed from a book I was reading on Perkin Warbeck and my
own family tradition. In our family, Henry Broom or Brome was born in
Warwickshire in 1794.
Lineage of the Warwickshire Broome/ Brome family was traced to Sir
William de Brome, who was standard bearer to Edward III, Thomas Brome,
secretary to Henry VI and to Henry Brome his son, who died in the
service of the Earl of Richmond at Bosworth in 1485.In the time of Henry
VI John Brome a younger son wed Joan, daughter and heir of Thomas Rody,
of Baddesley Clinton, and established their home in Warwickshire.
The surname Broom, Brome or genet is said to derive from the fact that
an Earl of Anjou went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Fulk, the earl of
Anjou, worn a sprig of the Broome plant as the symbol of humility. Fulk
was the father of Geoffrey Plantagenet, who married Matilda daughter of
Henry the first and widow of Henry V, emperor of Germany.
The above two paragraphs are a summary of information to be found on
page 604-605 of COMMONERS OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND by Burke, Vol.10.
Sincerely, Mary Jo
