I'm adding to this thread, my response to Al when he asked the same question
on the Newbie ISOGG list.
1) In general, be careful about 12 marker matches until you know if you are
dealing with a common or uncommon haplotype. One way you know that is if
you can see scores (sometimes hundreds) of matches with people with
different surnames.

This "common" problem is NOT restricted to those with AMH, WAMH and/or
haplogroup R1b. (My spouse is a haplogroup G2 and he has matches with
other surnames even at the 37 marker level.)

2) You may not realize you or a participant has a common haplotype if your
data is in a group project at FTDNA. The default is to only show matches
within the project. To see them compared to the entire database, the
personal preferences must be changed. You can do this as an admin and the
participant can do it also. You can change it back and forth (push Update)
and you have various options therein.
For example, in the Kinney project I have a person with hundred of matches
at 12 markers and scores at 25 and several at 37. NONE are with a variation
of the Kinney surname! The preferences for this person are set to show
matches (against the entire database) at 37 [or higher when 59ers are in].
On the other hand, I have participants with rare 12 marker haplotypes and
they are set in the preferences to show any matches anywhere - anytime.
