Dear James
Okay the R1b deep clade SNP tests really are probably ~5-15,000 years
old. They do though often act as a proxy for more recent location. For
example M222+ signals Irish 1500 years ago, S21 in turn signals
AngloSaxon rather than native Briton(if you come from Britain/England).
For S28 we are not sure yet but definitely somewhere from Europe.
You ordered FTDNA which is cheaper and no new sample is required. Wait
and when you get the results you can then determine if anything further
is required.
This is not an exact science and the field is advancing rapidly.
Cheers
John McEwan

If you are interested in SNPs and deep ancestry yes there is another
deep R1b clade test you can take. It is Ethnoancestry's the works
package. You can do a similar test through FTDNA at a cheaper cost but
S21 and S28 the two most interesting SNPs are not available from FTDNA.
I would wait until you had your 37 marker STR profile first. However,
if
you are truly interested by all means go ahead and get tested.
Hi, John:
I recently submitted my SNP results to your site. I'm R1b1 and my
Y-search
ID is 868ZR. I don't know what deep-clade testing can reveal about my
background that I would understand -- but I just ordered the deep-clade
SNP test from
FTDNA, anyway. What should I be looking for? Would Ethnoancestry have
provided information that I won't get from the FTDNA test? I ordered the
super-duper
mtDNA test from FTDNA early on, and learned that I my mtDNA Haplogroup
is
H*. I presume that means I can look to "Helena" from "The Seven
Daughters of
Eve" as my prototypical female ancestor? What I was really hoping to
accomplish
with these "deeper" tests is to find out if my James family came from
Cornwall or Wessex or Wales, or wherever, 1,000 or 1,500 years ago, as
opposed to
Iberia 17,000 years ago. From what I gather from reading this list,
that was a
naive thought, so what should I be looking to learn?
Thanks in advance for your help, and I apologize if these questions are
tiresome for those who actually paid attention in science class.
David James
