Garland,
I have an ancestor with a given middle name of Garland. I always wondered,
and do to this day, if it was a family surname or just a name his parents
liked.
Back to my Bates, I am interested in the Bates line you mentioned and
whether or not it might be related indirectly or directly to mine. My last
Bates was my great-grandmother Martha Elizabeth Bates, who was born in
Bedford Co. TN in 1844 and died in AR in 1932 (no death certificate, though,
just an obituary in the paper). I found a descendant of her brother
Zachariah Taylor Bates, and he took the y-dna test for me so we could find
out more about our Bates line. The results show he is from the same line as
John Bates (1598-1666) of York Co. VA, who married Elizabeth. John came over
on the Southampton in 1623/4 John's exact death date is not known, but his
will was dated 21 Sept. 1666 and proved 24 Jan. 1667 (source: The Valentine
Papers, York Co. Records). We know his birth year because he gave his age
during a deposition in 1660.
It would be great if this William Bates (or descendants) were interested in
participating in one of the Bates DNA projects. See http://www.bfoov.org,
click on DNA, and click on TEST RESULTS SO FAR). The Bates Family of Old VA
has a large base of participants and are running their project in
cooperation with another organization, the Bates Association of New England.
You can find a hotlink to the other Bates project on this website (mentioned
above). Even if William Bates or his descendants do not match my Bates,
he/they would have a good opportunity of connecting with other Bates he or
they match.
It isn't often that one finds one of her/his lines on a webpage done and
well researched by another previously unknown cousin. I was lucky enough to
find just that: http://www.carolshouse.com/familyhistory/Boler.

on John N. Bates, son of John A. Bates and brother to my Jasper M. Bates.
This personal article gives additional family information, such as names of
siblings' spouses.
Descendants have Samuel Bates as the father of John A. Bates. Someone in a
Bates organization suggested that it might be Daniel Bates, a brother to
Samuel, because penmanship could have been misinterpreted. However, realize
that this was the grandfather of John N. Bates and Jasper M. Bates, whose
parents lived until Jasper was 43 and John N. was 39. That is certainly long
enough to know the name of their grandfather.
