I find that statement puzzling. The only way they could make that
claim is to show either that there is no difference in the apparent
rates for synonymous and non-synonymous mutations within the gene,
or that the apparent rate within the gene is the same as the rate
for the chomosome as a whole. Neither method seems indicated by
anything else mentioned in the abstract. Also, I find the claim
hard to believe, whatever method they used to come to it.
