Subject: another purge on Rootsweb/Ancestry boards
Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2006 02:43:28 -0400

Well, the nazis at RootsWeb/Ancestry have struck again. I just noticed they
have come through my STRAUB surname board and deleted all messages with "DNA" in
them that had been posted since the last purge (summer/fall 2004). If you go to
the STRAUB board:

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.straub

and search on DNA, you'll get 16 hits. But if you try to link to any of the
messages, you're told the message has been deleted. And the only messages shown
on the hit list were posted in 2005 and 2006. The DNA messages purged in 2004
don't even come up on the hit list (although they're still present in the
board's "Recycle Bin").

While one might be able to argue that announcing a project or hustling for
members is out of place on the boards (though not in my book), there are
messages related to DNA testing that need to be on the surname boards. For
example, we recently tested a well-known and long-studied STRAUB line that had
been connected on paper to the major "PA Deutsch" STRAUB progenitor, who turned
out to be connected to a totally different and unsuspected other STRAUB. That
is news deserving to appear on the surname board, not so much because it's new
knowledge, but because it corrects a long-standing mistake.

Has anyone else noticed this purge on their boards?

Diana
