Hi all,
Anne reported a few days ago that a DNA-Fingerprint customer had received a
16519C result from an HVR1 test, even though their website says it only goes
to 16265. One of our K project members has a 16T result from a FTDNA HVR2
test, so they may really start with mutation 1. As far as I know, DNA-F is
the only company selling HVR3 as such; FTDNA and probably others include
that in HVR2. The 1-2-3 system as listed below is that used in older
studies, but is not very useful now. I've pointed out before that some of
the most important K defining mutations are outside the old HVR1 and HVR2
list. I would suggest anyone taking an mtDNA test make sure the company uses
a modern, full set of mutations and also provides a haplogroup designation.
I don't think many of us would be satisfied with a 4- or even 10-marker
Y-DNA test these days. The fact that a company does NOT sell an HVR3 test is
a good thing. I suspect DNA-F's mtDNA tests will soon be the same as
FTDNA's.
Nelda, the chart I found on your site lists the mtDNA haplogroups. I don't
see the need for that; the mutation lists are the same for each haplogroup.
By the way, I've been quiet recently because I've been traveling, attending
a family reunion, and visiting cemeteries so far back in the woods that I
swear I heard the theme from Deliverance.
