The way I have been following the recent discussion is
that we have two scenarios being presented for the
origins of the Ui Neill. The first is that they had early (possibly
Mesolithic) roots in Connaught and the second that they
arrived post 400 AD. Regardless of which scenario, the
question remains is how Ui Neill DNA ended up with a strong
presence in Galloway which I believe is being interpreted as
Strathclyde British territory.
I don't necessarily agree with the latter point. Galloway has
to be treated with caution. Remember the Selgovae
were there. With regard to the late arrival scenario one would
think of the Coel Hen dynasty which would include part of
Galloway. Off the top of my head, weren't their warrior
elite said to be campaigning in Ireland as mercenaries
after the fall to Angles?
Best wishes!
Peter
