Dear A,

I've been sitting back and watching as this debate has unfolded. I think it
started with a contention that one can't infer anything about the distant
past from the concentrations of haplogroups today. I suspect in some areas
this is true and other locales not true. I like the term "Ultra-Norse"
because it conveys to an audience (i.e. genetic genealogists) something
about where this haplotype is mainly found today. Now, I've stated and I
know Ken Nordtvedt agrees, that this is not a term of exclusion. In fact, my
haplotype falls into the variety Ken has labeled as "Anglo-Saxon," although
my particular family is most likely Ultra-Ultra-Norse! Population studies
generally focus on the mega-trends while anomalies, such as my family, also
exist.

Ken's work has been beneficial to me. He is discovering and describing what
already exists. For Ken's website, he uses these terms. If others want to
call these varieties by other names, I suggest there is not obstacle to
doing so. If you've performed some analysis that will help to further the
research into I1a, I know many people will be interested. I toil on my
little corner of I1a (http://home.comcast.net/~philgoff/deepancestry.htm)
and each discovery helps to fill in the entire history. By the way, my
labeling clearly needs help as I call my rare haplotype variety "DYS19=16."
I hope you will jump into the mix with some original research that will help
further genetic genealogy. Thanks,

Phil Goff
