Just reading that the Finns/Saami or paleolithic people are lactose
intolerant- ie didn't herd milking animals in the Neolithic+

There may be a neat line through Sweden between the R1b3 and the hunter
gatherers that matches the lactose intolerance line.

How did the people of Gothland (hope that is name that covers the district
you seem to be outlining- course that begs the question if we are looking at
the geats/goths) ie the areas with most R1b or is it also R1b1c? get to be
milk digesters in adulthood if they are the paleolithic people. If the R1b
being male stayed put then it would have to be the women who brought in the
gene. I guess if milk was your only source of calcium protein then
childbirth would be selecting lactose tolerant women. If you are a meat
eater herding reindeer or just hunting, the selection pressure isn't on.
This in turn selects the R1b men as well because they have the gene outside
of the y and the Mtdna, from their granny who came with the goats they
traded one day.

Brian --

Not sure about a neat line today -- there might have been at some time in
the past.

I didn't mean to imply the R1b were "the paleolithic people." If you got
that from my post, my apologies for lack of clarity. I was simply commenting
that R1b is not a "hot" haplogroup in Finland, and that its areas of
concentration are in the S & SW. I was following up to David's comment about finding
S21+ in Sweden. In fact, I think my brother might end up being S21+ (got to
find the money to order the test and then persuade him to swab for the third
time -- finding the money will be easier, even if I am dead broke at the
moment! :) )
