Based on John McEwan's S21+ ysearch list and recent comments by David Faux, I think it's safe to say that S21+ correlates highly with DYS492=13 (and 14).

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~geneticgenealogy/492.htm shows a comparison of allele frequencies for R1b haplotypes with DYS492=13 (and 14) vs. R1b haplotypes with DYS492=12 (and 11).

The only significant difference in frequencies is at DYS390, where:

- 56% of the DYS492=13 group has DYS390=23, and only
- 7% of the DYS492=12 group has DYS390=23

Note that the DYS492=13 and DYS492=12 groups both share the same modal values for all markers except for DYS492 and DYS390.

Searching the minimum at www.yhrd.org with these modals plus DYS390=23 yields http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~geneticgenealogy/yhrd23.htm

The top 20 locations are shown on the map with red circles. (Pantelleria, Italy and Southern Norway are in the top 20, but only have one DYS390=23 apiece)

Using DYS390=23 is not a perfect indicator of S21, but I think it gives us a reasonable indication of where S21+ may be found among modern YHRD populations.

Looking for DYS390=23 in the Capelli (et al) and Weale (et al) UK studies shows:

My thanks to James Fox and others on the list for input for the above.
