I didn't mean to (and hope that I did not) suggest that the 12 marker
test is useless, although if you could get 18 markers for the same
price that seems like a no-brainer.

A 12/12 match with someone of the same surname would seem to lead to
a conclusion of relatedness, but what do you do with a 11/12 or 10/12
match with someone of the surname?

In any event, if the family is well-documented genetically then you
are certainly in a much different place (and have more flexibility)
than someone is starting their analysis so your point about the
objective mattering is certainly well taken.
