I agree, and I did some work last weekend estimating the "optimal"
number of expected mutations you would want given a hypothesized
ancestor six or eight generations ago. This seems to be the time
when a lot of family trees go foggy.
If I find (or recreate) the analysis, I'll post it but memory
suggests that a 35 to 45 marker panel with an average mutation rate
of .004 to .005 is just about perfect from a cost/benefit point-of-
view. I was able to create such a panel by adding four DNA-FP
markers to the FTDNA 37 marker test, but it might be less expensive
to start from scratch with DNA-H.
