The subject header explains what a topic is about - but, in addition, there
are hidden codes that show which message you reply to and those are shown
'threaded' in decent software. Some people rely on that threading to follow a
discussion.
When you start a new topic / thread you should give a new subject title and
write in the To address for the list. Some people take an old message and
irrelevant message and set to reply to it and simply change the title so that
they don't need to type in the list address - it's already there for them. But
that doesn't change the hidden threading instructions. If you rely on the
subject title it looks OK. If your software works correctly and uses threading
then it looks a total mess.
All the messages that you send should be sent with you responsible for the
message in its entirety - spelling, punctuation, grammar, subject title,
quoted parts, AND threading information. ;-)
Start a new message? Don't reply to an old message.
