John, are you trying to tell us that after Al Gore invented the
Internet the British defined how to post messages on it? (TIC) I love
England and my British cousins, but I love American independence,
inventiveness and penchant for tolerance more. Your sources on
internet etiquette seem to be relatively recent. Some good points
there though.
my 2 cents worth.
If a post answers a question, it is sometimes convenient to isolate and
post that question first so the reader does not have to search out what
you are referring to. If it adds to a discussion, the rule I have been
advised to follow on e-mail chains is to read bottom to top. That does
become a problem if some folks top post and other bottom post. The
ones that are completely problematic are the ones where the post by the
current author is indistinguishable from those previous posts. This
seems to occur a lot with imbedded posts as so many folks just don't
manage to isolate their text from what they are responding to. Top
posting allows the reader to determine if he is interested right away,
especially in handy (but potentially dangerous in the case of SPAM)
preview windows, and to decide if he needs to go to the bottom and read
up to understand the subject first.
Getting rid of everything extraneous to the point of the current post
is always appreciated.
I will desist from continuing on with this wide diversion from DNA
related topics. Hope you are all having a great day.
