My surname is RHODES and has been so back six generations to my ggg-gf born 1776 (a good year!). He lived in Franklin Co., PA. Our family legend says that the surname was ROTH and we are of German/Swiss descent.

I've received my last panel of the 37-marker Y-DNA test from FTDNA. They say I'm in the "I" haplogroup. Does this mean just "I" or one of the larger group: "I1a, I1b...etc."?

I've checked Ken Nordtvedt's Excel spreadsheet for Modal Haplotypes for Y-Haplogroup I Varieties . It suggests that I’m closest to I1a-1ML? or I1a-uN1 or, perhaps, I1a-uN2.

What would I learn by going for more markers out to 67?

My real quest is to identify possible RHODES or ROTH family lines that might be 'cousins'. The RHODES group pedigrees are all from England. There are few ROTH lines with which to compare as yet.

Needless to say, I'm a neophyte here! Any help from you pros can provide will be much appreciated.

John M. Rhodes
