To be fair, I must again point out that the issue is not the mode of
publication but the lack of scientific method; most specifically, the
absence of a statistically valid random sample.

Published articles are one of the last stages of the generation and
dissemination of scientific knowledge today. Mailing lists like this
are the arenas in which the most up-to-date new findings are shared and
discussed. If this were a mailing list that consisted of practicing
scientists, I don't think anyone would be pointing to the fact that a
finding had not yet been published, in order to try to discredit it.
