Well, not entirely. You could test another line of descent in the U.S.
from near the emigrant ancestor. Did his son your paternal line ancestor
have brothers? It isn't necessary that there was marital instability;
there could have been a rape. But if a nonpaternity event happened the
same nonpaternal event probably did not happen to more than one child.
I'm fascinated by the mystery too.
The population of France is far more heterogenous than it once was. I don't
THINK it is highly likely that if you found both parents of an individual
born in France in the region that France kept exchanging with the German
states, in 1819, that he had African blood. There could be information I
don't know. Was anything else unusual about them? What can you tell us
about their occupation, religion, and likely recent history? What caused
them to emigrate from France at that time?
Have you actually traced your direct paternal line to 1700, or just the
surname?
