Rich:

I don't think this scenario was originally presented
to the list as speculative hypothesis (and I'm not
stating your the one who originally presented the
argument. Furthermore, the Celts at some point got
mixed up in the whole R1b=centum IE hypothesis,
needlessly confusing the whole thing) where comments
and criticisms were invited and eagerly received. I
don't think anyone is looking for encyclopedic
knowledge, but obvious problems with the scenario need
to be acknowledged and addressed. That will hopefully
assist in fleshing out idea into some type of working
hypothesis. The problem of all the other prevelant
European haplogroups, particularly I, E3b, R1a and J,
and where and when they likely first entered Europe
need to be incorporated in some manner into the
hypothesis.

Yes, according to linguists, Greek (and Armenian and
Thracian) and Hittite (and its related Anatolian
tongues) were the earliest known IE languages. If
there were earlier ones, they have been totally
eradicated from all sources. And yes, I do find
Mallory's argument against Anatolia being the original
IE homeland rather persuasive, as you note, although
it shouldn't be completely discounted. Given the
relative proximity of these areas to each other -
Anatolia, Armenia, Greece, the Balkans - the IE
homeland was likely somewhere in the near vicinity.
Also, what would give the IE speakers enough of an
edge that they could impose their language everywhere
they went? If not Neolithic agricultural technology,
then some other mechanism should be proposed. The
Greeks incorporated a lot of terms and concepts from a
non-IE language, not the other way around. It is
worth wondering why, in my opinion.

Also, where exactly is R1b thought to have originated?
I keep asking this question, hoping someone can point
me to a study addressing this question. I had assumed
it was Anatolia. Also, isn't Anatolia where the
occasionally rare R1*, founder to both R1a and R1b, is
found?
