However, if the island has been completely deforested long before
the food begins to fail, there may not be any boats, or even any
boat builders, left. That would make moving a bit more difficult.

This is very similar to what happened on Easter Island (Rapa Nui),
even to the detail of megaliths. However, the population did not
disappear, even though it dropped drastically.
