Looking at the construction of Roman built walls around Celtic
roundhouses in Britain seem to indicate some sort of control.
Anciently a comment made about Britains being so enamored by Roman
technologies such as the bath houses of Aqua Sulis they were really
enslaved without really knowing it. The Romans had control and ran
government their way, this is not to say the cultural aspects of
Britain completely disappeared but it was diminishing quite rapidly.
Christianity furthered the decline of Celtic pagan religions since
Constantine's edict of Milan.
So yes it may be a perception thing the Britons were enslaved. They
were not organized enough to overcome the Romans and were so divided
that some had welcomed the Romans while others such as the Silures
gave them a run for the money. My point I was making is that fear
enslaved the Britains because minority elites such as the far superior
seige ability of the Romans and naval and marine tactics of the
Vikings, and the horsemanship with archers of the Normans had a way of
instilling fear to implement control (some like me would say slavery)
as the rights of the native people diminished to below that of serfdom
until some leniency was given when it became obvious an undefeatable
uprising might ensue. Slaves or hostages for a ransom as the enemies
people were a commodity rather than something valued in terms of human
liberty and rights. I really doubt Romans could have cared about a
Briton's freedom; same goes for the Vikings and Normans. If you're
Indian you very well might think the British Empire enslaved your
people back then. Who knows? It's all perception.
