FTDNA seems to be moving away from the asterisk, reasoning that you won't be
R1b1c* forever. The original Y Chromosome Consortium suggested a notation like
this, listing the specific markers that have been eXcluded:

R1b1c*(x M126,M153,M160,M18,M222,M37,M65,M73,P66,SRY2627)

That's much more precise, but it's getting rather unwieldy!
