If it wasn't irregular, it wouldn't be a good model of real life. ;)
But there are controllable parameters at least. One I find instructive
is to first take two populations with no interbreeding between them
and note how the average genetic distance increases between the
populations, which it will. Then if even a very small amount of
interbreeding is allowed (say 1%) the average genetic distance between
the two collapses to very close to zero.
I saw a paper somewhere that described a similar result, where if
there are two populations A and B, each with a distinct haplotype, and
there is an occasional migrant from A to B (and never vice versa),
inevitably the haplotype of A will replace the haplogroup of B
completely. Diploid genes of B however will reach a steady state at a
non-zero percentage.
