Ann,
I emailed Dr. Krahn this morning for his opinion on extracting DNA from hair shafts, but as of now, I've not heard from him. I submitted a month ago a decent human hair sample that he advised me would be a "waste of money" to experiment with DNA extraction. The idea that contamination through handling, shampooing, etc., seems to be boldly discredited by the authors of the recent Science article. The keratin is the protective agent, according to them, of outside influences.
In any case, I hope FTDNA will revise their thinking on accepting hair shaft samples, as I think they will - eventually.
