Dangers?
I don't recall any mention by 60 Minutes of the dangers that many fear about
DNA testing: identity theft, inability to obtain insurance due to genetic
conditions, false identification with the DNA of criminals, "big brother"
government intrusion, NPEs, finding errors in prior genealogical research, etc. I
think 60 Minutes was pointing out that some have unrealistic
expectations--and that's important.
No, Richard, 60 Minutes didn't mention "dangers." I am saying that people
who have already heard such talk will likely hear "one more reason not to do
DNA" -- that is, it's "too uncertain" or "the companies don't really give you
an answer" -- from this report. So those scared of DNA testing for some
reason will have their negative view reinforced, I think, and as a Project
Administrator, I don't need additional fears to fight.
Some people DO expect too much, and that was a valid point. I just feel
that the way Stahl presented the different company reports left an impression
(on the unfamiliar viewer) that the whole field is too much of a crapshoot to
bother with.
