Hey, I grew up in Dunbar so I was a stone throw from you. In fact, I am cleaning out my moms house every day up in Dunbar trying to get it ready to sell it. I went to school Lord Kitchener and out high school was to be Lord Byng. I went to private school but my sister went to Lord Byng. My sister also lived in Kits on W.3 before she died. I love Kits and go down there alot on W.4th to Capers amongst other haunts but the traffic is giving me a major headache.
Thanks for touching base. Today, I sent away for the National Geographic kit because it was so affordable and I thought it would help the study they are doing. Once moms house is study, I will probably get involved with one of the more advance marker studies Family Tree DNA has. I really wanted to take part of a family surname study and that sort of frustrated me and my moms surname exists nowhere in a study. I am getting quite frustrated with it all. I do own a email list for the surname but I have not managed to get anyone excited about starting a dna group. Alot of them have major reservations about having their dna tested. I think I have one cousin talked into it but he would be doing it for the Mee's and sigh there are study groups for the Mee's. Thats the paternal line which of course I am of no use. sigh.....Glad to hear from a fellow lower mainlander from BC. My dad was with the Scottish Regiment from Ontario. He is deceased as all my family is
now. I have one daughter and that its folks! Sort makes me all the more anxious to seek out my roots. I really do understand that movie Roots all the more. I have felt that hunger all my life to understand my past since I have always felt I did not have one thus my interest in genealogy which I have been engaged in for years. DNA seemed such an exciting new frontier for me to perhaps open a new world of exploration to my past. Now it appears I might be finally able to start following up on it. I could not afford it before. I could only dream.

?Go with Family Tree DNA. Also EthnoAncestry is worth a look ( London).

Renee,
I am Canadian, living in Nova Scotia. I second Dora's comment. I've used
FamilyTreeDNA and
Ethnoancestry for my testing without the slightest concern. And, as Ken pointed
out, with our
dollar trading now above par with the US$ you will even save some money.
The following charts from the International Society of Genetic Genealogy
(ISOGG), provide some price
comparisons between various companies:
http://www.isogg.org/mtdnachart.htm
http://www.isogg.org/ydnachart.htm
There is a Vancouver-based company called GeneTrack BioLabs (http://www.genetrack.bc.ca/index.html).
Their commercial genetic genealogy front is called GeneBase (http://www.dnaancestryproject.com/).
I
have not used them so can not offer any first hand advice on their service.
However, based on the
reviews I've read I would not do business with them. See:
http://www.geneticsandhealth.com/2006/11/22/genebase-dna-ancestry-project/
GeneBase has only been in business for a year or so perhaps the problems they've
had are growing
pains. I do have one participant in my East Anglia Project who tested with them
and I've seen
GeneBase results from posted on YSearch. Since you are in Vancouver you could
probably stop in and
visit them for more info.

You're not required to use a Canadian firm - if there are any, and I don't
believe I've heard of any. You can deal with a U.S. firm or even with one
in Britain.
