Dear Roberta,
The people I have corresponded with at the SMGF say that they have
been very busy. I haven't heard anything about the SMGF doing Y chromosome
SNP testing and I suspect that they won't be doing much if any Y chromosome
SNP testing for some time since their primary focus is on autosomal DNA
testing. I wouldn't be surprised if they do autosomal DNA SNP testing
before they do Y chromosome SNP testing. I hope that they eventually will
run a large panel of autosomal SNPs on their samples, such as the Affymetrix
SNP Array 6.0, the Illumina HumanHap650Y, or the Perlegen 600Y, which test
for around 600,000 SNPs each. This would complement the autosomal STR
markers that they are currently testing for.
I have recently been informed that 15 of the samples I have sent to
the SMGF failed due to the fact that there was not enough DNA in the sample.
I am going to thus need to recollect samples from those 15 people. However,
I don't consider this too bad since I have sent over 500 samples to the SMGF
thus far, which is a failure rate of less than 3%. I don't know if the SMGF
is informing individual people about the fact that their sample failed or if
they are only informing people who are sending in larger quantities of
samples. It would seem reasonable for you to send a second sample if you
sent in a sample a year or more ago and if your mtDNA results don't appear
in the SMGF database once the mtDNA database reaches 70,000 or 80,000.
Sincerely,
Tim

Thanks Tim. I e-mailed Sorenson about my (lack of) results and got a very
canned response after about 10 days which indicated they'd be adding more
soon and if I'm not in that batch, perhaps I need to retest. Perhaps they
are behind in their correspondence that has been generated by the GeneTree
collaborative announcement. I surely hope you hear about the SNP question
as I'd like to know the answer for both yline and mtdna.

Roberta
