Yes, Ann you are correct about which organization I was asking about.

I have a client who is SNPed L1* and GeneTree predicted her T1. Hence, my
question was whether they were comparing against their SNPed data base or
predicting based on some other model. I was quite surprised at their
prediction, as based on the papers and such I've read she carries the
traditional HVR1 markers for L1.

When you say Sorenson in this context, I assume you mean Sorenson Molecular
Genealogy Foundation (SMGF, the research project), not Sorenson Genomics
(the testing facility, which can do any type of testing to order):

The mtDNA haplogroup prediction (and it is a prediction) is an added feature
of the GeneTree site. SMGF itself has no particular need for haplogroup
information for its research goals, since it is using haplotypes in
conjunction with genealogical information. Of course, haplotypes are much
more informative than haplogroups for that purpose. There are probably
hundreds if not thousands of distinct haplotypes within haplogroup H, for
example.

SMGF did do some validation studies with SNPs to develop the prediction
algorithm for GeneTree. I suspect the success rate would be comparable to
the findings of the Genographic Project, where motifs for some haplogroups
are quite reliable and others are a bit fuzzier.
