Hi David,
There is much to be said about research into Sasquatch. Various species of the genus
Gigantopithecus are known from the Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene of southern Asia. The
skeletal, dental, and general skull characteristics of the Orangutan appear to have some close
correlates with the Gigantopithecines, Sivapithecines, and the so-called 'Ramapithecines'. If
Sasquatch were to be revealed as a living biological species, then I wouldn't be surprised to learn
that it's a "Great Ape" closely allied to the Gigantopithecs and the living Orangutans.
OK, if many readers don't have a clue about the above genera of Pongids, Hominids, Pongoids,
Hominoids, and other forms of higher apes that might have been -somehow- related to some
-particular- lineage of hominins that led to us modern humans, then don't get too disturbed.
This sort of argument has been been ongoing for at least the last 35 years (more than 1/3th of a
century), if not for most of one-half or so of a century. Just run a search on the extinct species
Zinjanthropus boisei or its equivalent within the genera Australopithecus or Paranthropus. Then run
a search on Ramapithecus versus Sivapithecus.
Beyond that older stuff then you begin to encounter discussions of Ouranopithecus and similar
taxons. Warning! WARNING!!
WARNING!!!...Will Rogers! Beyond this point you might want to pursue an educational regime
resulting in a Ph.D. in hominoid paleoanthropology.
Otherwise, you're like me - just thrashing around with just a bit of knowledge to fortify your own
opinions...
Sincerely,
Dale E. Reddick
