Dear Don,
Yes, I believe that people sending their samples to the SMGF should
send a gedcom file that shows all of their known ancestors. I did just that
when I gave my DNA sample to Scott Woodward's organization (pre-SMGF) in
2001 when they were here in Portland for the National Genealogy Society
convention. At that time they were taking blood samples. I simply exported
a gedcom file of all of my known ancestors from my database onto a floppy
disk and gave that to the people who were taking the blood samples.
For the Mennonite project I have a working relationship with one of
the SMGF genealogists. The Low German Mennonites have a genealogy database
called the GRANDMA database that now has over 1,000,000 people in it. See
http://www.calmenno.org/grandma/index.htm for details. I send the SMGF
genealogist a new version of that database each time it is updated every
several months. This way the genealogist I work with has the most
up-to-date genealogies of all of the people of Low German Mennonite ancestry
who have sent in samples to the SMGF, of which there are now about 1000
people. I also notify this genealogist whenever I note that any particular
pedigree chart in the SMGF database is incomplete so that they can add
whatever additional information is available on that person's ancestry from
the GRANDMA database.
The SMGF autosomal database hasn't been released yet. I suspect it
will be released within the next 1-2 years, but I don't know when it will be
released. The more complete and accurate the pedigree charts the SMGF has,
the more useful the autosomal database will be. The last I heard the SMGF
is checking about 300 autosomal DNA STR markers. It wouldn't surprise me if
the SMGF was to do large scale autosomal SNP testing at some point in the
future as well. The SMGF X chromosome database also hasn't been released
yet. Possibly it will be released with the autosomal database.
Sincerely,
Tim Janzen

Tim,
So we should send in a gedcom of all our lines, not just the patrilineal
and matrilineal?
I had only heard about searching for Y or mt results at SMGF. I didn't
realize that they were showing autosomal results. How does one search for
autosomal results?
Thank,
Don
