I've actually done quite a bit of research on the feasibility of teaming up with an academic entity on our Hungarian Bukovina project. I found that there are some (probably) insurmountable problems. Most of them concern human subject protocols, which are extremely rigorous. Also, they require subject anonymity, which rather defeats the purpose of our project (which concerns surnames and genealogy).

Ironically, since we have everyone's ancestors back to 1780 or so, we are in a better position to confirm ethnic identity than are many of the academic studies.

Apparantly, the institutions are not even allowed to contribute financially to our project (since it identifies the subjects by surname and place). They sure love the data, though! And apparantly if I publish it first, then they are free to use it :-)

That's why our project is still totally funded by private contributions.
