I live in Hungary, and can't say I know any Hungarians who consider themselves "Northern Europeans". In fact, their only argument is whether the Magyars originated in Siberia or in Central Asia (i.e the present Kazakhstan, Iran, and so forth). Believe me, Hungarians love to argue about this topic, so if there were a theory of "Northern European" origin, I would have heard it by now.
And I do read a lot about the topic (in English, German, and Hungarian)
