I would like to see more information on WOY. For folks to pay
to explore these segments without prospect or knowledge of what
can be found nullifies the justification for test a segment.
Can I propose a approach to testing to find potential archeological
SNPs ?
With the HAP-Q's or HAP-I1as, would it be possible to have say 500
of the Q's, or 500 of the I1a's. each sign up for one or two different
segments
along the Y-DNA.
With multiple folks signing up for a different segment, we might be able to
advance quicker than with individuals signing up for the same segment.
Just a thought.

Good points all, Pat.:-)
But on the positive side we were told that those who have failed
results in one run will move to the cue for the next segment for free.
No variations at all might be a disappointment. But the odds are
against that being the case for all probands in all Haplogroups of a
run.
This could also be win/win for both the Haplogroup searchers and the
Family groups searchers as well. Say the McSnags family has an R1b
modal haplotype at 67 markers. They would really like to know how to
rule out MacBleach near matches from the same county in Virginia once
and for all. They decide to run three paper trail confirmed McSnags
through a WOY batch. There are a few other R1bs from the same modal
haplotype who also test in that run. If the MacSnags all have a SNP
that the other modal folks do not have then there is a good chance
that it is a family SNP and they may proceed with testing from there.
They have also helped out the Haplogroup researchers but that is
secondary to solid genetic genealogy family research. Why would they
want to find a family SNP? Well once they have it then they may skip
testing those 67 markers and test only for the SNP. That, long term,
will save them time and money.
So:
* No results --a null segment-- gets you a free run in the next segment.
* A family SNP is good for family research.
* A regional SNP is good for tree structure and geographic migration
studies.
* An archaeological SNP is good for tree structure.
* No SNPs at all are still OK if someone else in the Haplogroup
sub-clade has a SNP. (Someone has to be ancestral after all.)
All SNPs would be reported to the dbSNP database. Regional and
Archaeological SNPs would be documented and added to the proper ySNP
trees. It would be the bleeding edge and we would learn a little more
each time. What was tried would be open and available to all.
This means that the key to a high success rate would be a high buy in
rate from both Haplogroup researchers and Family Group researchers.
Pat, maybe you can think of the five biggest Surname projects with
large groups of members who belong to the Scots Modal Haplotype?
To some degree those who test are writing the rules here. Is there
something the Genetic Genealogy community wants from this that has not
been mentioned? Isn't this what people have been saying they want for
the last two plus years? It is sequencing of a substantial segment of
the y-chromosome. If this is not what is wanted then what is?
