I would do only minimal research to see if anything is already known about a connection. You might search with the matching surname on surname message boards and lists. Otherwise, I would concentrate on testing others in the family tree. See this thread for a summary of the methodology:

If they are closely enough related for genealogical research, the ancestral haplotypes will likely match or be off by 1. If a non-paternal event is uncovered, more research and testing would be warranted.
