I have had my yDNA 67 markers, mtDNA (1&2) as T2 and SNP (R1a1) all done
by FTDNA
I, have many matches on mt DNA which runs on my mothers side, .long
searches will get me there, .ie 200+ yrs which is in today's terms
1800's
But my yDNA is as if I came from another planet, admittedly many
others will have to be tested. Names or variations of the name do not
connect. So I will need to wait.
However, how can I then trace my mothers father ? (my grandfather) and
at least have a twig on my family tree. I have some female relatives
i.e. siblings of my grandfather. I have live relatives on my mothers
side ( her fathers wife) which I have contact with, Ten years of
searching has not born fruit. - My tree is barren on a male side.
Can this be done genetically or am I totally reliant on a paper trail
which may be bombed out of existence because of some egotistical master
race megalomaniac.?
Another question arises is how can my grandchildren later on trace their
male line (i.e. me ) if they all happen to be females. ( which is my
case) How does a female find her grandfather genetically on her mothers
side ?

Wal

Just to make you feel a little better, neither my father's, my mother's
mother's father's, my husband's, nor my my father's mother's mother's father's
YDNA have a match yet. Not anything even close. So apparently my whole family
is from other planets and I married an alien from yet another one!

For your mother's father, you will need a male with a direct line descent
from him, or from his brother or grandfather. To get my mother's father's YDNA
I had to test her paternal uncle's grandson. To get her mother's father's I
had to test her maternal uncle's grandson. To get my father's mother's
mother's father's YDNA I had to get my father's mother's mother's brother's son to
test. It's not always possible to find an appropriate donor. My father's
mother's father is a dead loss because she had no brothers who lived to
procreate, and we know absolutely nothing else about her father's family except his
mother and father's name (John and Anna Johansson, which in Sweden is like
hunting John and Mary Smith). We don't know where in Sweden he came from, or
whether he had siblings. The paper trail that did exist went into the trash
the day after his funeral because my paternal step-grandmother said "It's all
in Swedish and nobody can read it anyway."

As to your grandchildren, since you have done your Y-DNA, they can rely on
that YDNA. I would suggest you test it as completely as the technology allows
while you are here in case your sample left behind deteriorates to badly to
allow additional testing in the future. You might consider some of those
Storage cards that someone was looking to put together a group batch on, too. I
would certainly submit samples to every lab that offers something no other
lab offers and get those tests.

I answered your last question above. My mother's father and my mother's
mother's father and my mother's mother's mother's father have all been tested
through cousins with the YDNA desired.
