For the tests at RG, the DNA is stored at SG for 20 years, whether the person opted in to Ancestry or not.
You may also want to look into home storage kits also.
I am somewhat concerned, however, by the fact that we don't (to my knowle
dge) have any DNA stored, and we may want more information in the future as new
technologies become available.
SMGF is a good choice for an individual, except that potential matches can't
get in touch with those who submit samples.
