I agree. The irrationality of consumers is a well-known phenomenon.

Why would you need to upgrade if there was

only real value of the 12 marker test for FTDNA
is for them to keep this as the base price/value
making one have to pay more for the tests of
real value. Anyone with business/marketing

Hi Larry,

I completely agree. Without the affordability of the 12-marker test, we
could never have started our Bukovina Hungarian project. It's easy to
upgrade to more markers if/when we find a 12/12 or an 11/12 match. When
these matches occur, the North America (read: "paying") project members get
a lot more interested and frequently pay for the upgrades.

Some of the people we test in Transylvania are a total "shot in the dark"
(we test them based solely on their surname). If they don't come close to
matching their Bukovina surname counterpart, we just leave it at 12 markers
for the time being and go on to something else.

Our 110 members represent 11 different haplogroups; I think much of the
advice given on this list pertains to R1b British Isles ancestry, which has
its own test strategies and issues.

Actually, the 12-marker test is very useful for our haplogroup Q1¢s in our
VICK project. It is far from a "complete waste." We have no trouble
identifying descendants of our immigrant ancestor with 12-markers, and the
price makes it easier to recruit participants.
