Subject: [DNA] omnipop and DNA Tribes comparison

Dear List,

I have mentioned before on this list that I found the omnipop analysis of
autosomal markers useful in my genealogy research. Using omnipop is
absolutely free, but I wanted to compare omnipop's results with DNATribes'
analysis, for my own curiosity's sake. Last year, using my husband's
autosomal markers and my own, the DNA Tribes' analysis was, frankly,
laughable concerning my own results, but quite useful for my husband's. DNA
Tribes had my ancestry being mainly Indonesian, which, while I know that my
ancestry in the last few hundred years is mainly British Isles with some
Native American and some African American thrown in. On the other hand, my
husband scored pretty much as we would have predicted, except for a very
high Ashkenazi match. Since then, we were contacted out of the blue by some
folks researching their surname, Neyer, which is the same as ours. It
turned out that they are from a long line of Jewish folks. So, in this
case, DNA tribes was very helpful and showed us something which we had not
expected.
DNA tribes now has a more detailed analysis, using more of the autosomal
markers and with an expanded comparison of population lists. I decided to
get an update of my results just for comparison's sake. The analysis I
received this time was much closer to what my own research has shown to be
true. It was very, very similar to my results from omnipop. In addition,
two cases, DNA Tribes listed matches with populations from Dundee and
Strathclyde, from where my own research has shown some of my father's people
came. At some point I think I will get an update on my husband's, again for
comparisons. In the meantime, I am continuing with my own very traditional
genealogical research. I did think this an interesting observation and
wanted to share it with others.
Mary Jo
