A false positive at 12 markers generally means that you match to some one who has a surname different than your surname.
It does not necessarily mean ( this could be a paternal problems that occurs occasionally) it is not true but further testing at the 25 and 37 marker level generally shows this to be true. We have had a number of matches ion the Hendricks DNA Project at 25 markers with two different surnames but the 37 marker test has so far proven to be the separator.
So to save people worry we have adopted the practice of only doing 37 marker tests and it proves helpful in showing kinship based upon our Hendricks Family data base.

12 marker testing gives to many false positives with people who are not kin.
It does give you a haplogrooup which helps sort people into different
kinship groups.
What determines a false positive. Trying to learn this stuff in tiny little
bits and pieces. So far, I understand Haplo Groups. And maybe a tiny bit
more.
