Re: minimal order screening tests of Y-DNA and mtDNA:

Most of the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests that I have ordered
could have stopped at the Genographic minimal orders of
12 markers for Y-DNA and HVR1 for the mtDNA and I would
have gathered about as much information as I could ever
have needed to find matches. Granted, I am dealing with
very specific and unique markers. Agreeably, that is not
the case for most people. But, believe it or not, even for some of
us with R1b and H haplogroups, there are success stories.
I have seen pedigree matches with minimal sequence information
in both YDNA and mtDNA. It may be the exception and not
the rule but some of us are lucky gamblers. Hmmm, I guess I
have stopped while I was ahead.

For most people, ordering the maximum number of markers will be
most cost effective way to get enough information. But if I have
to pay for other people to see if I can rule them out or see if they
are a possible match, then I always start with the minimum
order through the Genographic Project and newbies seem to
appreciate that their DNA is helping to fund research.
