Laura,
I said 10 markers maybe I should say ten steps. If marker DYS19 for A was DYS19=12 but the person you were comparing to was DYS19=14 that would be two steps of a difference. if they were DYS=10 it would still be a two step difference.

now compare the G2 with the other men
G2 is 3 steps different from G1. But G6 is only 1. The differences are added together to equal the total amount of differences. it does not matter if the difference is more or less from the one your using to compare to it is still that amount. - & + are not add and subtract here they are greater then or less then > & < , and must be added together to get the whole.
