Hi,
Yep we use different words to mean same thing...
Step, distance, difference are the same when used with comparing the results of a marker with another marker. markers have names (TYPE) and reference identifications. most but not all places tested in a males test are STRs Short tantum repeats or is it returns? any way most but not all are DYS and then numbered.

Then you have mutations, but all that is is a change.. the change is a mutation from the first person to have that result on that marker. Now, eventually when you get enough closely matched related individuals you average out the results of each marker and come up with an estimated haplotype for the common ancestor. In doing this you can then start working on branches of that family. and where you thought that guy with 6 steps difference from the common ancestor haplotype wasn't related actually is, because he is only 3 steps from a descendant of the common ancestor's haplotype

understand?
